Launch the media gallery 1 playerIrene-Wakonda brought home some awards from the 2026 High School Journalism Conference! Awards for the SDHSAA Journalism/Yearbook Contest were announced during the event. The contest is for articles written and published between Nov. 2025 - Sept. 2026 and for last year's Yearbook.
Irene-Wakonda winners this year included:
Duncan Sharples-Schmidt and Cash Johnston - EXCELLENT in Sports Writing for a story about the basketball seniors in Feb. 2026
Duncan Sharples-Schmidt - EXCELLENT in General News Writing for a story written about Mr. King last spring.
Alyssa Kirschenman (2026 A-H Graduate) - EXCELLENT in Sports Writing for an article about track and field season written last spring.
Duncan Sharples-Schmidt also won another very special award:
SUPERIOR in Feature Writing for his story about the band and chorus seniors last spring. Duncan received 47 of 50 points on his article to receive the coveted Superior status, received by only 10 entries in the whole contest!
Irene-Wakonda also won an EXCELLENT ranking for its 2026 Yearbook. Congratulations, Stacy Huber and last year's Yearbook Class!
